Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Picture
What should I bring?
You should bring the following:
  • Wisconsin fishing license with Great Lakes Outlying Waters Stamp
  •  weather appropriate wear
  • soft soled shoes
  • camera
  • sunscreen and sunglasses
  • food and beverages
  • a cooler for your catch which can be left in your vehicle - the boat has a fish box
What about fishing tackle ?
All necessary fishing tackle (rods, reels, lures)  is supplied by the captain.  If you have a "lucky" lure feel free to bring it aboard.  We'll run it!
Will I need a fishing license?
All anglers over 16 years of age are required to have a Wisconsin fishing license.  Don't worry.  Captain Jeff sells both a license which includes the required salmon/trout outlying waters stamp ($14), as well as the outlying waters stamp ($10) for those who have the WI fishing license.  These can be obtained at the boat prior to departure.
Are children welcomed on Fish Tales? How old must they be?
Absolutely! Captain Jeff is very comfortable with children aboard and has a special interest in teaching youngsters about fishing.  With adult assistance very young kids can get a salmon to the boat and enjoy the start of their life-long passion.  If parents are considering bringing young children aboard for their first time, a call to the captain to discuss their needs would help to ensure a safe, fun, and successful outing.
Is a morning or afternoon charter best for catching fish?
Low light conditions (sunrise, sunset) enhance catches as fish are actively feeding.  However, experience has proven that fish can be caught throughout the day in different locations and with alternate techniques.  Book your charter around your Door County activities and the times of day that work best for your party.  We'll catch fish!
Can you accommodate individuals with special needs?
Captain Jeff has great understanding and experience serving individuals with special needs, and is very willing to provide necessary accomodations or adaptations for the angler in need.  Call and we'll discuss your concerns. Safety and comfort will be foremost in mind when you are aboard.
How often do people get seasick on board?
Actually, very seldom.  I've learned that most anglers with concerns of this nature take a preventive OTC medication prior to beginning their fishing trip.  If this is your first outing consider whether vehicle travel causes nautiousness, as that can be a good clue.  However, should discomfort aboard lead you to want to return to the dock, know that the captain will willingly do so and pro-rate your trip accordingly.
What if we do catch fish - what do we do then with them?
Not a Problem - Celebrate!!  Captain Jeff professionally cleans and bags your catch with freezer space available if needed.  Your captain will also help you safely transport your catch, and recommend shipping or smoking services if interested.
We enjoy eating fish but may not know how to prepare our catch. Any suggestions?
Captain Jeff enjoys cooking fish and has many recipes he would be glad to share with you.  However, for a truly memorable experience consider the CATCH AND COOK option.
